Government To Build Apartments For Felda Settlers

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) -- The proposal to build apartments in Felda settlements will enable new generation of Felda settlers to own houses and minimise the subsidy borne by the government, said Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Ahmad Maslan.

He said that it would be more cost effective to build apartments.

"The government will be able to minimise the burden of subsidising infrastructure facilities in Felda settlements and at the same time allowing more settlers to own houses," he said in reply to Datuk Abdul Manan Ismail (BN-Paya Besar) during question time in the Dewan Rakyat here Tuesday.

For a start, Ahmad said, the government planned to build apartments in Jengka 11 in Pahang.

Ahmad also told the Dewan Rakyat that several housing projects for the new generation of Felda settlers had been approved in Jengka 19, Chini 3 and Triang 3 in Pahang, Neram 1 in Terengganu and Ciku 5 in Kelantan involving a total of 1,910 units.

He said that at the moment, Felda had completed four of the housing projects while another was still under construction.

The projects involved 2,119 units of houses and of the total, 830 units had been occupied, he added.

The areas involved are Bukit Goh, Lepar Hilir, Mempaga and Keratong in Pahang and Pasak in Kota Tinggi, Johor.

Ahmad said the housing facilities would encourage the new generation of Felda settlers to remain in their settlements and prevent migration into urban areas.

He added that Felda would continue to implement housing projects depending on the availability of funds.
